Two rockfalls occurred in Bisisthal, Switzerland on Sunday, releasing a total of 450,000 cubic meters of rock. No one was injured, and all roads and paths in the danger zone, including an alpine hiking trail, were closed as a precaution. The first rockfall, in Gwalpeten in the Muotathal municipality, released 150,000 cubic meters of rock. The second released 300,000 cubic meters. The fallen rock had been under observation for years due to an increase in block slides observed by local shepherds. Measurements of the rock showed a steady increase in movement, so a rockfall was expected at any time. As the rockfall occurred in an alpine area, the damage was limited to grazing land. Access to the danger zone remains closed, and the road from Sahli to Waldi will be closed from 7am to 8pm on Tuesday.
