The Bernina road remains closed for the time being for safety reasons following rockfalls. The canton of Graubunden announced on Friday that it would not be possible to open the road during certain time windows for the time being. It will provide further information on Monday.
The heavy rainfall is still causing delays in the clearing and safety work. The Graubünden Civil Engineering Office is working flat out to reopen the road to traffic as soon as possible.
Various measures to increase safety have been implemented since the boulder collapse on October 26, according to the statement from the Grisons Civil Engineering Office. In recent days, however, it has become apparent that the terrain is very unstable. New erosion points are constantly appearing in the demolition area, which need to be secured.
These spots are mainly caused by the heavy rain and snowfall and the resulting water-saturated ground. As a result, new landslides are constantly occurring right down to the road. In some places, the road is covered with meters of debris.
A possible alternative connection between the Engadine and the Poschiavo Valley is possible via the Maloja Pass, the Civil Engineering Office continues. If the Forcola di Livigno is open due to the snow conditions, a bypass via Bormio via Livigno is also possible. The Civil Engineering Office strongly recommends checking the current road conditions at www.strassen.gr.ch before setting off.
