Swiss officials launch a formal investigation into allegations against Israeli President Herzog during his visit to the World Economic Forum.
Swiss law enforcement authorities have confirmed the receipt of criminal complaints against Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Submitted to the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland, these allegations were publicly acknowledged on Thursday evening.
The legal process is set to unfold, with the Attorney General’s office collaborating closely with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). A key aspect under consideration is the immunity status of President Herzog. The nature of the charges, however, remains undisclosed by the Attorney General’s office.
The accusations stem from a collective named “Legal Action Against Crimes Against Humanity.” This group, in its communication, expressed a strong desire for the initiation of a criminal investigation. They believe that such an inquiry could run concurrently with ongoing proceedings at the International Criminal Court. The group is adamant about Switzerland’s obligation to conduct this investigation.
Historically, Switzerland has bypassed diplomatic immunity in notable cases, such as that involving former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh. The advocacy group argues for similar treatment towards Western leaders facing allegations.
The specific charges against President Herzog, currently participating in the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, have not been detailed in the group’s statement.
Israel is under scrutiny by the UN International Criminal Court for allegations of genocide linked to its military actions in the Gaza Strip. Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th.
