Li Qiang, Chinese Premier who assumed office in March last year, is set to meet President Viola Amherd in Bern on Monday.
This high-profile meeting marks a significant moment in Sino-Swiss relations. The visit, which includes talks with Swiss delegations, underscores the ongoing diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.
In addition to his official visit, Premier Li Qiang is participating in this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. His presence at the WEF highlights China’s active role in global economic discussions and its commitment to international collaboration.
Switzerland and China have enjoyed a robust bilateral relationship since 1950, characterized as “good and diverse” by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).
Since 2010, China has emerged as Switzerland’s most significant trading partner in Asia and the third-largest globally, following the EU and the USA.
In March 2021, the Federal Council unveiled a comprehensive China strategy. This strategic framework aims to enhance the coherence of Swiss policies towards China from 2021 to 2024.
It focuses on key areas such as peace and human rights, prosperity, sustainability, and digitalisation, aligning with Switzerland’s foreign policy priorities.
There is also speculation about an upcoming visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj to Bern. While details are not confirmed, this potential visit, coupled with his attendance at the WEF, is generating significant interest in diplomatic circles.
