A mountain climber fell while descending the Matterhorn on Thursday afternoon.
The rescue services could only ascertain the man’s death, as the Valais cantonal police announced on Friday. The formal identification of the victim was still in progress on Friday.
According to the police, he was descending the Matterhorn with two other alpinists via the south-west ridge at around 11.45 a.m. on Thursday. For reasons still unknown, one of the climbers fell at an altitude of 3,700 metres above sea level and subsequently plunged 600 metres down the northern rock face.
The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation in cooperation with the cantonal police.
