Switzerland is the safest country in Europe to visit if you are looking for a worry-free summer vacation, according to a new study by Gamblino.com.
In ranking European countries’ safety measurements, researchers analyzed nine different metrics per 100,000 people, such as natural disasters, homicides, sexual assault cases, theft, road fatalities, global peace index ranking and personal freedom index. Each country was given a score out of 10 on each of these metrics.
A higher score means a higher chance that a tourist may encounter a threat to their safety while traveling in that country. The top countries and their scores are as follows:
Unsurprisingly, the last two countries on the list are Ukraine (75.1) and Russia (93.8).
“When choosing great travel destinations, it is important that travelers are well informed on the countries they are travelling to, including how safe a place is,” a Gamblino.com spokesperson told The Brussels Times (Belgium ranked 25th on the list). He added that “Europe offers incredible opportunities for travellers who wish to see the diverse landscapes, architecture, ecosystems and cultures that exist across the continent.”
The study echoes what Forbes reported in 2022 – that Switzerland is the safest travel destination, thanks to its low crime, top notch healthcare and lack of pollution. While tourists can generally relax while in Switzerland, they should be aware that pickpocketing on trains and busses continues to be reported, so there are campaigns to make locals more vigilant.
