The Burgdorf Castle Museum BE is dedicating an exhibition to the 100th anniversary of the Swiss Youth Hostels until December 29. Photos and videos taken by guests of the hostels take visitors on a journey into the past.

On April 28, the Swiss Youth Hostels celebrate their 100th anniversary. The laying of the foundation stone for this type of accommodation in 1924 also marked the start of youth tourism in Switzerland.

The Burgdorf Castle Museum, which has been home to a youth hostel since 2020, is paying tribute to youth accommodation as part of Swiss cultural history with the exhibition "100 years of Swiss youth hostels - eating loudly, snoring and playing together".

The community character of the youth hostels plays a central role here. For the duration of the exhibition, exhibition posters in three versions matching the title will be displayed in all youth hostels.

Uniform bed linen as a unifying element

While the young people initially slept on straw and cooked and washed up themselves, the youth hostels today offer half board and shared rooms as well as double rooms with shower/WC and sometimes even a wellness area.

The uniformity of bed linen has always been the unifying element of youth hostels, the Burgdorf Castle Museum and the Swiss Youth Hostels remind us. The exhibition shows all variations from woolen blankets to the latest bed linen created by designers in the textile sector.

The Swiss Youth Hostels, a non-profit organization, records around 800,000 overnight stays per year and focuses on affordable tourism for young people and families. "We want to give everyone the opportunity to discover the world and new cultures. At the same time, our goal is to enable everyone to travel, with a focus on sustainability," Janine Bunte, CEO of Swiss Youth Hostels, is quoted as saying in the press release.
