Around 135 members of the Swiss Armed Forces are helping to cope with the storm damage in Ticino and Valais. The construction of a military relief bridge is planned in Ticino.
The civilian authorities in the Cevio region in the Maggia Valley are currently carrying out the necessary engineering preparations in order to safely begin construction of the bridge, the army announced on Tuesday. The bridge is to be built by around 35 members of the disaster relief standby battalion.
In the region of Sierre and Chippis in Valais, members of the disaster relief standby battalion and the 6th battalion are pumping out masses of water and clearing traffic routes. Members of the armed forces are also on standby to provide lighting for the civilian emergency services. If necessary, it should also be possible to work at night.
As part of a permanent performance agreement, the army was already deployed with air force resources at the weekend. Aerial photographs enabled the civilian crisis management organizations to obtain a comprehensive picture of the extent of the storm damage. The air force also supported the evacuation of around 300 people from a cut-off area in Ticino at the weekend using two helicopters.
