The "16 days against violence against women" campaign came to an end on Sunday. For more than two weeks, the prevention and awareness-raising campaign against gender-based violence focused on psychological violence against women.
More than 250 partner organizations took part with over 200 events and campaigns throughout Switzerland, as the organization announced on Sunday, International Human Rights Day. The 16 days of action were held for the 16th time this year in German-speaking Switzerland and have now been extended to French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino. The days of action were organized by the feminist peace organization Frieda.
Psychological violence is largely invisible and the most common form of violence in relationships, Frieda wrote. Almost a fifth of women have experienced stalking at least once in their lives. 60 percent of LGBTQIA+ people have been harassed.
According to the press release, those affected by psychological violence, as well as those around them, still find it difficult to recognize or acknowledge psychological violence in Switzerland. Those affected are questioned, belittled or isolated. According to Frieda, psychological violence is not a criminal offense. Work is now underway to amend the Criminal Code to include a separate criminal offense for stalking.
The campaign was launched on November 25, the International Day against Violence against Women.
