The Saudi Arabian oil company Saudi Aramco emitted 2.5 billion tons of CO2 last year. This makes it the largest listed greenhouse gas emitter in the world, according to a study by the US financial services provider MSCI.
The second largest CO2 emitter is Petrochina, China's largest oil company. It emits 1.3 billion tons of CO2 annually. Third place goes to the US oil company Exxon Mobil with 1.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide.
By comparison, the cement company Holcim, the largest greenhouse gas emitter on the Swiss stock exchange, emitted 127 million tons of CO2 last year. It was followed by the food giant Nestlé with 88 million tons and the technology group ABB with 77 million tons.
The figures refer to the end of February 2024 and take into account CO2 emissions from the entire value chain (Scope 1, 2 and 3), from raw material extraction to the end consumer. Some of the emissions were estimated by MSCI, as not all companies publish their CO2 data transparently.
The twenty largest listed CO2 emitters in the world are almost exclusively companies from the energy and mining sectors. The exceptions are car manufacturers SAIC (633 million tons) and Dongfeng Motor Group (458 million tons) from China, Porsche (503 million tons), Volkswagen (488 million tons) and Toyota (477 million tons).
