From this Thursday evening, rail travelers and commuters in Germany will once again have to prepare for considerable restrictions in rail traffic throughout the country. It was initially unclear how severely Switzerland would be affected.
The German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) has called for a 24-hour warning strike at Deutsche Bahn. The strike is scheduled to begin on Thursday evening at 22:00 and last until Friday evening at 22:00. However, disruptions are expected even before the official start of the warning strike.
The extent to which connections with Switzerland will be affected was unclear on Wednesday evening. SBB referred to the strike in its online timetable and wrote: "Further effects are currently unknown. We will keep you informed."
All employees in the long-distance and regional transport sectors, among others, have been called out to strike, as have employees of the suburban trains in Berlin and Hamburg.
According to the announcement, the strike in freight transport will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening. Among other things, the union wants to emphasize its demand for a reduction in working hours for shift workers.
Deutsche Bahn criticized the GDL for spoiling the second Advent weekend for millions of uninvolved people. A strike so soon after the onset of winter and so close to the timetable change was irresponsible and selfish, criticized Martin Seiler, Deutsche Bahn's head of personnel.
"Instead of negotiating and facing up to reality, the train drivers' union is going on strike for unfulfillable demands. This is absolutely unnecessary." The GDL last went on strike at Deutsche Bahn on November 15 and 16.
