A 42-year-old French mountaineer died on Tuesday morning while descending from Mont Vélan (3722 m) in the Genz region between Switzerland and Italy. His lifeless body was found on the Pro Glacier on Wednesday.
The alpinist apparently fell on the Hannibal ridge, the Valais cantonal police wrote in a statement on Wednesday. The Frenchman had reached the summit shortly before 10 a.m. on Tuesday and contacted his wife to tell her that he was going to descend.
When she heard nothing more from him until late afternoon, she informed the French gendarmerie. The Swiss rescue services, who were also notified, immediately began an aerial search and initiated technical investigations, according to the cantonal police. Among other things, a Swiss Army Super Puma was deployed.
The lifeless body of the missing man was discovered on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. during a search flight. The public prosecutor's office launched an investigation.
