504 major public events have benefited from state premium-free insurance during the coronavirus pandemic. Seven events had to be canceled.
The federal government and the cantons each paid out a total of CHF 6.2 million to the event organizers. Three sporting events, three trade or public fairs and one cultural event were affected by the cancellations. On Wednesday, the Federal Council approved the report on the protective shield for public events.
Accordingly, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Jura, Uri and Zug decided not to participate in the protective shield. Of the remaining 22 cantons, 15 issued 504 pledges totaling CHF 316 million during the pandemic from 1 June 2021 to 31 December 2022. 259 related to cultural events, 138 to sporting events, 91 to trade or public exhibitions and 16 to other events.
Without the protective shield, many events would have been at risk, according to a press release. The highest number of pledges was in the canton of Zurich with 239, followed by St. Gallen (100) and Graubünden (71). The average commitment per event amounted to CHF 628,000.
