During the devastating thunderstorm near Brienz BE on Monday evening, around a third of the usual monthly amount of rain fell in the region within an hour. A meteorologist from MeteoSwiss told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request that 42 millimetres of rain had been recorded.

The rain had fallen within a very short time. The value is the value registered at a measuring station. Locally, there could have been much more rain. Local radar estimates put the figure as high as 80 millimetres.

There was little wind, so the thunderstorms moved slowly, which brought a lot of precipitation locally, the meteorologist continued. The thunderstorms on Monday were heaviest in the Bernese Oberland. However, there was also a lot of rain in central Switzerland in parts of Uri and Schwyz, according to the statement.

The current heatwave in the north is set to end on Tuesday. The corresponding heat warning will be lifted, according to MeteoSwiss. According to the forecasts, it will remain warm, but no longer hot. In the south, the heat is likely to continue until Friday. Another heatwave is not foreseeable for the time being. Although such a wave is still possible until the end of August, it is less likely, the meteorologist explained.
