During an inspection in the district of Zofingen, the veterinary service of the canton of Aargau found 11 dead rabbits and 40 cats that were being kept in poor hygienic conditions. The cats are now being handed over to animal shelters.
The inspection of an animal keeper and an animal owner took place at the beginning of February following an animal welfare report, the canton announced on Thursday. 11 dead rabbits were found in the rabbit hutch and 40 cats were found in the house, which were being kept in poor hygienic conditions.
According to the canton's experts, the cats are in an acceptable health condition, as reported by the Department of Health and Social Affairs (DGS). The cause of death of the rabbits, which were in a filthy rabbit hutch, is still being investigated.
The couple, who were overburdened with keeping the animals, had shown themselves to be cooperative and communicated their willingness to give up the cats. Nevertheless, the veterinary service banned both of them from keeping the animals.
According to the DGS, the placement of the many cats is challenging. Animal shelters have hardly any capacity to take in animal welfare cases and boarding kennels are very busy, especially during vacation periods. For this reason, some of the cats remain in their owners' homes temporarily.
