Iran has sent an "important message" to the USA following the suspected Israeli airstrike on an Iranian embassy building in Syria.

The Foreign Ministry in the Iranian capital Tehran had summoned a diplomatic representative from the Swiss embassy, Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday night. In the conversation, the minister went on to say that the USA shared responsibility as a supporter of Israel.

The minister did not provide any specific details on the content of the "important message" to Washington. Switzerland represents the interests of the USA in Iran, and the two countries have not had diplomatic relations for more than 44 years.

On Monday, two brigadier generals and five other members of the powerful Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) were killed in an airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital Damascus. Iran's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack and blamed arch-enemy Israel for the attack.

The Revolutionary Guards are Iran's elite armed forces and are considered to be significantly more powerful than the regular army. Founded after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the unit is intended to prevent a coup and protect the state ideology. The IRGC are also active abroad with the so-called Al-Kuds brigades.

Since the 1979 revolution, the USA and Israel have been considered Tehran's arch-enemies. The Revolutionary Guards in particular have expanded the Islamic Republic's influence in the region in recent decades. Four years ago, the USA had one of the most powerful generals, Ghassem Soleimani, killed in a drone attack in Baghdad.
