Alexander Fasel has been appointed as the new Secretary of State in the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA). He will take over from Livia Leu, who was in charge of the delicate EU dossier. The appointment was announced by the Swiss Federal Council on Wednesday. Fasel is a highly experienced diplomat, having served in various roles in the Swiss diplomatic service since the 1990s. He has held posts in the Swiss embassies in Washington, D.C., London, and Brussels, and has been the Swiss ambassador to the United Nations since 2017. He is also a member of the Swiss delegation to the United Nations Security Council. Fasel's appointment is seen as a sign of the Swiss government's commitment to strengthening its ties with the European Union. He is expected to play a key role in the ongoing negotiations between Switzerland and the EU, as well as in the implementation of the Swiss-EU Framework Agreement. Fasel's appointment is also seen as a sign of the Swiss government's commitment to promoting gender equality in the diplomatic service. He is the first male Secretary of State in the EDA since the position was created in 2002.
