The suspected arsonist from Elgg ZH has been remanded in custody. The 44-year-old is allegedly responsible for several fires in the small country town near Winterthur.

The compulsory measures court approved the public prosecutor's request for pre-trial detention, a spokesperson for the Zurich public prosecutor's office confirmed to Keystone-SDA on Thursday. The local Swiss woman has largely confessed, as the cantonal police announced on Tuesday. The investigation is still ongoing.

There was a whole series of arsons in Elgg in the first half of the year. Several buildings were set on fire or attempts were made to do so. A major fire in the town center in mid-March caused extensive damage to several houses. To increase the sense of security, the municipal council decided to stop extinguishing the street lamps at night.
