A hunter has to answer to the Werdenberg-Sarganserland District Court in Mels SG on Thursday on charges of poaching. He is also accused of preparing a protected lynx without a permit and violating the Weapons Act. The public prosecutor's office is demanding a conditional prison sentence and a temporary hunting ban.
The St. Gallen public prosecutor's office accuses the 58-year-old of illegally shooting two red deer. In one case, he also went hunting red deer at night without permission. In both cases, he concealed the killings from the game warden of his hunting party and did not declare them anywhere.
He was not sure whether he had hit another animal. The hunter allegedly wrote this to an acquaintance after shooting one of the red deer, according to the indictment. In doing so, he violated key duties of care when hunting and breached the cantonal hunting regulations.
On another night, according to the indictment, the man was again stalking without permission and in an area for which he was not authorized to hunt. In doing so, he fell into a photo trap. When the hunter noticed this, he allegedly removed the camera.
Hunting ban demanded for four years
The man is also said to have found the carcass of a lynx in a stable. Without the appropriate permit, he prepared the skull of the protected animal and displayed it in his bedroom. According to the public prosecutor's office, the hunter should have been aware that he should have reported the animal he had found.
In 2021, a house search was carried out at the defendant's place of residence. A prohibited weapon and prohibited weapon accessories were found. He also kept several weapons in unlocked cabinets. According to the prosecution, this meant that they were inadequately protected from access by third parties.
The public prosecutor is demanding a conditional prison sentence of eight months and a fine of CHF 7,000. The 58-year-old's hunting license is to be revoked for four years.
