Sunday is certainly a good day for Switzerland's electricity supply: this is what one of the co-presidents of the Alliance for a Secure Electricity Supply, National Councillor Christian Imark (SVP/SO), had to say about the Swiss people's "yes" vote on the energy decree.
"This represents a small milestone in securing the electricity supply," Imark told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Sunday on request. He had expected an approval rate of 65 to 67 percent.
During the referendum campaign, the supporters of the energy package decree succeeded in demonstrating that a Yes vote was better than a No vote, which is how Imark explains the success of the Yes camp. Imark also believes that many voters are of the opinion that the expansion of renewable energies is a contribution to tackling climate change.
However, Imark went on to say that major challenges remain on the path to securing the electricity supply in Switzerland. This applies in particular to the time after the shutdown of the existing Swiss nuclear power plants.
