President Viola Amherd and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have initiated a new phase in relations between the EU and Switzerland. Much remains to be done in the negotiations for a new agreement and the teams must find solutions.

Amherd said this on Monday at a joint media event in Brussels. For Switzerland, it is important to maintain access to the European market for domestic companies. At the same time, immigration must be geared towards the labor market and the protection of wages must be guaranteed.

Furthermore, the participation of researchers in European projects is also important so that "our bright minds" can work together in the interests of the population as a whole. Amherd concluded by saying that Switzerland and the EU were not only linked by interests, but also by values and goals: the commitment to peace, democracy and the rule of law.

Von der Leyen: "Package of ten agreements"

Von der Leyen called for swift negotiations. The momentum must be used and work should continue at full speed. "Our goal is to conclude the negotiations before the end of the year," said the EU Commission President. The EU wants to strengthen relations with its closest economic partners. She spoke of a package of ten agreements.

Von der Leyen emphasized the "good protection" of the rights of European citizens working in Switzerland: "For us, it is crucial that all EU citizens are treated equally in Switzerland - regardless of which member state they come from."
