With 88,000 visitors, the Fantasy Basel trade fair has set a new record. The largest trade fair for fantasy and science fiction themes, computer games and comics in Switzerland closed its doors on Saturday after three days.
A highlight of the tenth fair was an exhibition of giant fan objects from the "Star Wars" films, according to the organizers. The Swiss Space Museum displayed a huge model of the James Webb Space Telescope and the latest images from the universe.
In addition to the trade fair, Fantasy Basel also offered a huge festival for so-called cosplayers. These imitate fantasy characters from a movie, manga, anime or video game. Figures in elaborate costumes bustled around the exhibition halls, including orcs from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Disney princesses, knights, numerous heavily armed US soldiers and many "Stormtroopers" from the "Star Wars" series dressed in white.
They all put themselves on display or visited the numerous stalls selling games, films, tattoos, comics and cosplayer paraphernalia. Among them were many stalls with swords and other weapons that are omnipresent in fantasy comics, games and films.
Film stars were also in attendance. According to the organizers, actors and actresses from well-known films and series such as Stranger Things, Outlander, Reign and Harry Potter were in attendance. The next Fantasy Basel will take place from May 29 to 31, 2025.
