Around a third less snow in the Alps in 100 years

A study coordinated by Eurac Research in Bolzano shows a drastic decline in snowfall in the Alps. According to the study, a third less snow fell between 1920 and 2020, the research institute announced on Tuesday.
A significant decrease has been recorded since the 1980s, "which coincides with an equally significant rise in temperature", said study author and environmental meteorologist Michele Bozzoli. The development of new snowfall in the Alps is strongly negative. There has been an overall decline of 34 percent.
The strongest decline was recorded in places "below an altitude of 2000 meters and in southern areas, i.e. in Italy, Slovenia and parts of the Austrian Alps". In the northern Alps in particular, in Switzerland and North Tyrol, altitude plays a "central role." A decline of 23 percent was observed there. In the south-western part of the Alps, it was as much as half.
The study was published in the "International Journal of Climatology".
