The German-Russian artist Walter Spies, who died in 1942, shaped the image of the island of Bali as an earthly paradise and is still valued there today as a source of identity. A scenic installation in Basel revives his spirit.
In the scenic installation in the exhibition rooms of the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger entitled "Roots", the author, filmmaker and art curator Michael Schindhelm runs an abandoned and somewhat neglected hotel.
Based on the dazzling biography of the German-Russian artist and influential Balinese-by-choice Walter Spies (1895 - 1942), the trail traces the island's development from an earthly paradise to a hotspot for mass tourism.
