The number of new asylum applications in Switzerland also fell sharply in November. At 2325 applications, it was around 26 percent lower than in the same month last year.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) reported on Tuesday that the trend of the previous months had thus continued. A total of 25,884 asylum applications were registered in the first eleven months of this year. In 2023, the figure was 27,980 up to the end of November.
Afghanistan was also the most important country of origin in November 2024 with 590 applications. In November, around 100 asylum applications were submitted by Afghan nationals who already have residence status in Switzerland. Other important countries of origin were Turkey with 279, Algeria with 183 and Morocco with 100 applications.
Of the new applications registered in November, 356 were secondary applications. These are, for example, births, family reunifications or multiple applications. In 1969 cases, these were primary applications. This is around 17 percent less than in November a year ago.
Last month, the SEM reported that it decided on 2859 asylum applications in the first instance. Just over a quarter of these were approved. A total of 859 people without the right of residence left Switzerland without being checked, 515 of them independently. 344 were escorted by the police to their country of origin, the responsible Dublin state or a third country.
