Asylum procedures for refugees from the civil war-torn country of Sudan will be resumed in Switzerland. Based on a current assessment of the situation, the State Secretariat for Migration lifted the moratorium on the decision and execution of expulsions for asylum applications from Sudan on Monday.
This was the Federal Council's response to a question from National Councillor Balthasar Glättli (Greens/ZH) during question time in the National Council.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) had suspended the procedures for Sudan in February of the current year. The people concerned therefore had to wait indefinitely in great uncertainty for an asylum decision, Glättli wrote in his submitted question.
This is all the more incomprehensible given that there is currently no sign of the dramatic situation in Sudan calming down. Rival military factions and armed militias have been fighting each other in Sudan since mid-April 2023.
According to the Federal Council's written response on Monday, a case-by-case examination will continue to be carried out. The security situation and the socio-economic situation in Sudan would be taken into account when examining the obstacles to removal.
