In the canton of Aargau, asylum seekers, temporarily admitted people and people seeking protection from Ukraine will receive CHF 8.50 per day to buy food in the coming year. The Grand Council has approved the request for an increase of 50 centimes. In 2018, the amount was reduced by one franc.
During the discussion of the 2024 budget on Tuesday, the minority of a parliamentary committee called for an increase of one franc. The Grand Council rejected this proposal in a contingent vote. However, Parliament approved an increase of 50 centimes per person per day - by 71 votes to 64.
The SP, the center, the Greens, GLP and EVP were in favor. The SVP and FDP and the government council were against any increase. The adjustment, which is intended to compensate for inflation, will lead to additional costs of around CHF 1.13 million per year. 8,500 asylum seekers live in Aargau. From 2024, they will receive CHF 8.50 per day for food and CHF 1 per day in pocket money.
A year ago, the Grand Council rejected an increase in the daily flat rate. The low rate compared to the rest of Switzerland has applied in Aargau since 2018. The reason for the reduction at the time was a savings program.
Since then, they have been given 56 francs a week, which must also be enough to buy toiletries. In addition, there is one franc per day as pocket money and a clothing allowance of 20 francs per month.
