In view of the continuing dramatic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has criticized Israel in no uncertain terms and called for action. "Never in the last 12 months has so little aid reached the Gaza Strip as now," said the Green politician. All border crossings into the coastal area must be opened for aid deliveries. Israel must do more for the civilian population - "without excuses".
Meanwhile, dozens of people were again killed in new attacks by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. According to Israeli reports, a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist was killed in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, dozens of Arab and Islamic countries want to discuss the war in the Middle East in Riyadh today at the invitation of Saudi Arabia.
Baerbock: Israel did not keep its promises
With regard to the humanitarian situation, Baerbock criticized that Israel had repeatedly made promises in this regard, which were then "not kept". "A large proportion of the more than two million people are suffering from acute malnutrition and are living in unimaginable conditions," Baerbock continued. In no other place in the world are there so many children with amputations in such a small area. "Large parts of Gaza are an absolute shambles," said the Minister.
In view of the approaching winter, nothing is more urgent than the release of hostages held by the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the delivery of urgently needed aid for the civilian population. Israel's right to self-defense is limited by international humanitarian law, which means that humanitarian access must be granted at all times, Baerbock warned. She once again called for a ceasefire.
Israel: Terror commander killed in Gaza Strip
The Israeli army says it has killed the military chief of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed Abu Sachil. He had only taken office in May after his predecessor had also been killed by the Israeli army.
Islamic Jihad confirmed Abu Sachil's death to the German Press Agency. According to the army, he was killed in an attack on a former school in the north of the Gaza Strip. His son and daughter and three other people were also killed. The PIJ is regarded as one of the most radical militant groups in the Middle East, but is considered less powerful than Hamas.
According to Palestinian reports, dozens of people died in an Israeli attack in the northern Gaza Strip, including many minors, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
Many dead again in attacks in Lebanon
Israel again attacked targets in Lebanon. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least 38 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes and others were injured. At least 23 people - including seven children - died in an attack on the town of Almat, around 15 kilometers east of the port city of Byblos.
Israel's army said on request that Hezbollah weapons depots had been attacked. Prior to this, measures such as aerial reconnaissance had been taken to avoid civilian casualties. The details of the attack are still being investigated.
Meanwhile, Israel's military said it had shot down a drone from Lebanon. The flying object was initially observed and then shot down in the Galilee region in northern Israel, according to reports.
Defense Minister Katz: Hezbollah defeated
Israel's new Defense Minister Israel Katz declared the Lebanese Hezbollah militia defeated, according to a media report. Israel's strikes had defeated the militia and the elimination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was the crowning jewel, Katz said at a Foreign Ministry event, according to a report in the Times of Israel.
Israel claims to have discovered Hezbollah tunnel under cemetery
According to the Israeli army, it has discovered a Hezbollah militia tunnel system filled with weapons in southern Lebanon, which was partially located under a cemetery. According to the army, command and living quarters as well as storage rooms with weapons and combat equipment were found in the complex under the graves. There was initially no further information on the location. Normally, Israeli soldiers blow up such tunnels. In this case, however, the approximately one-kilometre-long complex was sealed with around 4,500 cubic meters of concrete.
Israeli citizens urged to exercise caution at events abroad
Following the attacks by mostly pro-Palestinian youths on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam, Israel's National Security Council called on citizens in general to exercise caution at events abroad. They should avoid sporting and cultural events outside Israel in which Israeli teams or artists are taking part, as the newspaper "Haaretz" reported, citing the Security Council. This warning also applies to the Nations League match between France and Israel in Paris on Thursday.
In the night from Thursday to Friday, there were targeted attacks on Israeli fans after a football match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv. The attacks were condemned as anti-Semitic violence. Amsterdam had imposed a ban on demonstrations. On Sunday, police there arrested dozens of participants in a banned pro-Palestinian demonstration.
Talks in Riyadh
At the invitation of Saudi Arabia, representatives from more than 50 Arab and other Islamic states want to discuss the situation in the Middle East in Riyadh today. According to Saudi Arabia, the meeting will focus on the "sinful Israeli aggression against the occupied Palestinian territories and its extension to Lebanon". Saudi Arabia hosted a similar meeting a year ago. Among other things, a committee of various ministers was set up to work towards an end to the Gaza war. The initiative has not yet had any effect.
