Basel hospital receives no order for liver transplants

The University Hospital Basel is still only allowed to transplant kidneys - it has not received an additional mandate for liver transplants. This means that nothing will change in the Swiss healthcare system when it comes to organ transplants in adults.
The decision-making body for highly specialized medicine (HSM) decided on Tuesday to award the various service contracts unchanged to all six hospitals that already perform organ transplants.
This means that the University Hospital Zurich may continue to perform the entire catalog of heart, lung, liver, pancreas, islet and kidney transplants. The other hospitals can continue to carry out their existing sub-areas.
These are the University Hospitals of Bern (heart, liver and kidney transplants), Lausanne (heart, lung and kidney transplants), Geneva (liver, pancreas and islet and kidney transplants) and Basel (kidney transplants) as well as the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen (kidney transplants).
The HSM justifies the fact that the University Hospital Basel was not awarded the contract for the liver transplant sub-sector with a lack of demand for a fourth hospital. "Care can be ensured by the three hospitals that currently carry out liver transplants."
The new, unchanged service contracts are valid from July and are limited to six years. The area of organ transplants has been planned jointly by the cantons since 2010. The HSM hospital list is binding and takes precedence over the cantonal hospital lists.
