Basel parliament with highest proportion of women in German-speaking Switzerland

No other cantonal parliament in German-speaking Switzerland is as female as the Basel Grand Council, which was newly elected on Sunday. The proportion of women is now 46%, which is higher than ever before. In the Aargau Grand Council, on the other hand, the proportion of women fell to 30%.
The proportion of women in the new Basel Grand Council is the second highest in Switzerland after the parliament of the canton of Neuchâtel, as announced by the Basel Parliamentary Services on Monday. The new Basel parliament, whose legislative period begins on February 1, thus has the highest proportion of women in a Swiss-German cantonal parliament (cut-off date: election day).
On Sunday, 46 women were elected to the 100-member Basel parliament. This corresponds to a share of 46 percent. In the elections four years ago, the proportion of women was 42%.
Fewer women in the Aargau parliament
The opposite was the case on Sunday in the election of the Aargau Grand Council. The proportion of women in parliament fell by 1.4 points to 30 percent (as of election day). In future, 42 women will be members of the 140-member cantonal parliament, as the State Chancellery's analysis of the election results shows.
Women made up 39.6 percent of the candidates. Although more women stood for election on Sunday than four years ago, fewer women were elected to parliament. Three women were not re-elected.
