Basel’s city center belongs to the children

On the afternoon of the second carnival day in Basel, the city center belongs entirely to the little ones. Countless costumed children parade through the streets on foot or in carts with "Räppli" (confetti) and sweets.
Waggis, Ueli and Pippi Longstocking are particularly popular costumes with the "Binggis".
The big carnival revellers were also out and about. While everything follows a planned route during the Cortège on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and the subjects are presented, there are no rules on Tuesday. Everyone puts on an individual "Charivari" costume and "Zyschtigs-Zügli" are formed with members of different cliques.
Guggen concerts in the evening
There is also whistling and drumming wherever you like. As the word "Gässle" suggests, the small alleyways of the old town are particularly popular. While the tambourines and pipers retreat there in the evening, Claraplatz, Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz belong entirely to the Guggenmusik bands. They play their concerts there in the evening.
The popular lantern exhibition takes place on Münsterplatz until Wednesday morning, and in the afternoon the Cortège once again attracts tens of thousands of onlookers to the city. The "drey scheenschte Dääg" in Basel end with the "Ändstraich" on Thursday at 04.00 am.
