In response to the recent cases of abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, a Bernese Councillor has proposed to suspend all payments from the Canton of Bern to the Church until a plan to address the abuse is approved by the Great Council. The motion, submitted by GLP Councillor Tobias Vögeli, calls for the suspension of all payments to the Catholic Church that are not related to a service agreement, and for no new or extended service agreements to be made until further notice. Vögeli argues that it is problematic for the same institutions or people who were involved in the cover-up to investigate the cases, and that the Canton of Bern has a political and historical responsibility since the accused were state employees at the time of the alleged offences. The Canton of Bern currently supports the three dioceses with a total of 72 million francs per year. The results and measures to adjust the system of the Catholic Church must therefore be independently reviewed. Payments will only be released when a plan is presented that comprehensively and transparently addresses the abuse in the Catholic Church in the Canton of Bern in recent decades and prevents it in the future. The motion was submitted as urgent and is expected to be discussed at the next or latest session of the Great Council.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
