Block 1 of the Beznau nuclear power plant in the canton of Aargau will be taken off the grid for a short time on Saturday. The reason is repair work on a cable in the non-nuclear part of the plant, as the energy company Axpo announced on Friday.
The cable is located in the area of a 220-kilovolt transformer and must not carry any current during the repair. Therefore, pumps and other parts of the system supplied by it had to be taken out of operation.
As these components are necessary for power operation, the plant will be shut down during the work, as Axpo writes. The plan is to reconnect unit 1 to the grid on Saturday evening. During the shutdown and start-up, steam will visibly escape from the nacelle in the non-nuclear part of the plant.
