The city government of Biel/Bienne remains in red-green hands. The SP and Greens defended their three seats on the five-member municipal council on Sunday, as the city announced on Sunday. The two other seats remain with the French-speaking Free Party and the SVP.
The battle for the mayor's office has not yet been decided. No one achieved an absolute majority in the first round of voting. The run-off will take place on November 24. Mayor Erich Fehr (SP) was no longer a candidate.
It is certain that he will be succeeded by a French-speaking woman. The run-off is between Natasha Pittet from the Free Democratic Party and Glenda Gonzalez Bassi from the Parti socialiste romand. The latter missed the absolute majority in the first round by only around 100 votes and received around 760 votes more than her rival. Both are members of the city government.
With around 56,000 inhabitants, Biel is the tenth largest city in Switzerland.
