After the Council of States, the National Council is also calling for a ban on the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas in Switzerland. On Tuesday, it adopted a corresponding motion from its Security Policy Committee (SIK-N) without opposition.
Last week, the Council of States approved an identical motion by its Security Policy Committee without opposition. Both committees argued that Hamas had completely discredited itself as an interlocutor with its inhumane attack on Israel at the beginning of October.
It can only be described as a brutal terrorist organization. It is therefore important for Switzerland to take a clear stance.
The Federal Council requested that the two motions be accepted. It had already decided in November to instruct the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) to draw up a draft law to ban Hamas by the end of February.
Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, Head of the FDJP, told the Council that her department was at work. The planned law would provide the authorities with the necessary instruments. In response to questions from two SVP National Councillors, Baume-Schneider defended the planned consultation on the draft law.
The SVP National Councillors had wanted to know whether an urgent enactment procedure would not be appropriate in view of the broad approval in both chambers. Baume-Schneider said that it was part of the political culture to put laws out for consultation. However, the Federal Council will already decide on the law in February.
