On Saturday, around 160 pedestrians were flown by helicopter from Birg to Mürren BE due to a technical fault on the cable car in the Schilthorn ski area. Skiers and snowboarders were not affected by the malfunction.
Operation of the Mürren-Birg aerial cableway was suspended at 11.15 a.m. due to a technical fault, as reported by Schilthorn Railways. The fault in the electronics had been localized but could not be precisely defined and rectified for a long time.
Those responsible therefore decided at 1.30 p.m. that the pedestrians waiting in Birg and on the Schilthorn should be transported from Birg to Mürren by helicopter. This made it possible to ensure that all 160 or so waiting people were back in the valley before nightfall. The winter sports enthusiasts were able to ski down to the valley via the Kanonenrohr descent.
The fault has been found in the meantime, it said. The railroad will probably be able to resume operations before the end of the service.
