Shortly before the second anniversary of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis will speak about humanitarian demining at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday. On Friday, he will also attend the UN General Assembly and a meeting of the UN Security Council.

A third of Ukraine's territory is mined or contaminated with other munitions. This is equivalent to four times the area of Switzerland. This has dramatic consequences both for global food security and for the local population, as Cassis' Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced in advance.

Demining and decontamination is a basic prerequisite for the reconstruction of Ukraine, which was devastated by the Russian war of aggression, and the return of the civilian population. Switzerland is strongly committed to demining and will organize an international ministerial conference on the topic in October.

On Friday, Mr. Cassis will address the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council meeting. According to the FDFA, he will reiterate Switzerland's call for compliance with the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.

He will also express Switzerland's commitment to a comprehensive, lasting and just peace in Ukraine. In both forums, the head of the FDFA will reaffirm Switzerland's intention to organize a high-level conference for peace in Ukraine.

Various bilateral meetings are also on the Foreign Minister's agenda, as reported by the FDFA.
