Speaking to the media in Bern on Monday, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis compared the search for peace in Ukraine to mountain climbing. This mountain must be climbed.
The conflict has global repercussions. War has already been raging in Ukraine for 16 months. Switzerland, with its past as a mediator, cannot simply wait. "We dare to speak of peace."
At the Bürgenstock, Switzerland is prepared to consider all points of view. It is also important to consider how Russia can be included in the process.
"We have always shown openness to extending an invitation to Russia." However, Russia has always said that the country has no interest in the conference.
The conference in Nidwalden is intended to initiate a peace process. It represents a first step. Switzerland is now putting all its efforts into achieving this first milestone. There is no alternative.
