Closure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel lifted

Freight trains in the Gotthard Base Tunnel have been able to run normally again since 2 pm. The tunnel had been closed in the morning due to a vehicle fire.
The reason for the closure of the tunnel was a security company's vehicle that caught fire in a side tunnel near Faido shortly after 8 am. 29 workers were evacuated by a fire and rescue train, according to the Ticino cantonal police. Ten of them had to be taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, said the Ticino cantonal police at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. They did not provide any further details about the fire.
