Plant protection products that can be used in certain European countries are to be approved more quickly in Switzerland than at present. The responsible committee of the National Council has submitted proposals for consultation.

The simplifications are to apply to plant protection products that are approved in a neighboring EU country as well as in the Netherlands or Belgium, as the parliamentary services announced on Monday. The consultation will last until December 9, 2024.

In such cases, Switzerland should automatically adopt the approval of the active substances by the EU as a basis. However, the products would have to be checked in terms of water protection. The authorities must also clarify whether special domestic provisions for the protection of humans, animals and the environment are complied with.

The majority of the Economic Affairs Committee (WAK-N) also wants to stipulate that the procedures must be completed within twelve months. It is becoming increasingly difficult for agriculture to combat new types of pests and increasing resistance with suitable means, they say.

Today, new plant protection products are only approved in Switzerland after a long delay. In contrast, products are constantly being withdrawn from the market.

The minority is against the simplified authorization procedure. They fear that the risks posed by plant protection products will no longer be adequately taken into account. Other minorities want simplified authorizations, but with restrictions.
