Committee submits voting rights complaint on runway expansion

The committee of the popular referendum "No to runway expansion at Zurich Airport" is lodging an appeal against the vote on March 3, 2024. It accuses the canton of having changed and shortened the counter-arguments submitted on time on its own authority and without consultation.
An accompanying graphic, which was to be included in a statement, has been completely deleted, according to a statement on the voting rights complaint reported by "SonntagsBlick". The no arguments for the runway expansion were now missing from the voting newspaper: the page was half empty.
The canton had given the assurance that possible objections would be reported and, if the desired graphic was not accepted, the space that became available could be filled with text. The referendum committee should also have received a "good to print". Both commitments were broken without consultation, according to the committee's statement.
The committee is calling for the voting documents to be reprinted with the counter-arguments, as is the right of the referendum. If this is not possible in terms of time, the vote should be postponed from March 3 to June 2024.
The Zurich State Chancellery stated in a statement on Monday that it had not been possible to reach agreement with the referendum committee within the deadline on a text with any graphics that would have complied with the legal provisions and the requirements of the State Chancellery in terms of content and form. This had not been possible despite intensive dialog, assistance from the State Chancellery and the extension of the submission deadline. The referendum committee has the right to appeal. The Federal Supreme Court would decide in the final instance.
