The number of company bankruptcies in Switzerland rose again at the start of the year. However, the rate of increase slowed slightly compared to the bankruptcy rate in 2023 as a whole.

A total of 497 companies went bankrupt in Switzerland in January, according to the business information service Dun & Bradstreet on Thursday. This corresponds to an increase of 4 percent compared to the same month last year, which is 1 percentage point lower than in 2023 as a whole.

In regional terms, bankruptcies increased the most in Central Switzerland (+21%), followed by Zurich (+16%), Southwestern Switzerland (+12%) and Eastern Switzerland (+4%). In Espace Mittelland and Northwestern Switzerland, the number of bankruptcies fell by 8% each compared to January 2023, while in Ticino there was even a drop of 15%.

New company formations also increased. With 4276 new entries in the commercial register, this was 3% more than in the previous year. Southwestern Switzerland recorded the largest increase in new patrons with a plus of 12%, followed by Espace Mitteland. There was only a negative trend in the cantons of Zurich and Ticino (-1% each).
