The baked goods manufacturer Hug continued to grow last year. Turnover rose by 2.3 percent to 126 million Swiss francs in 2023.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, business with the Dar-vida brand of wholemeal crackers was particularly successful. Sales grew by 10 percent, driven by a revised packaging design and new products. The brand "reflects the zeitgeist of healthy snacking", Anna Hug, Co-Managing Director of the family-run company, was quoted as saying in the press release.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer of the Hug, Wernli and Dar-Vida brands generates a large proportion of its turnover in the catering business. The company reported that tartelettes and frozen products for kitchens and bakeries accounted for almost 40 percent of sales last year. Hug attributed the high demand to the shortage of skilled workers in the catering industry.

In the food service sector, the family-run company from Malters LU intends to continue to grow both in Switzerland and in exports over the next few years, according to the statement. To this end, Hug is also investing in the renovation of a tartelettes production facility this year. The investment volume amounts to 11 million Swiss francs, Hug announced.

Cookie market schwieriger

The biscuit market ultimately proved to be more difficult, the company announced. In this segment, Hug, known for its Willisauer-Ringli and Wernli Guetsli biscuits, was able to grow mainly through price increases.

Looking ahead, the Group is confident. However, costs for the procurement of raw materials, personnel and electricity will continue to rise in the current year, it said.

As a family business, Hug does not disclose earnings figures. The operational business is managed by Anna Hug and Marianne Wüthrich Gross. Andreas Hug is Chairman of the Board of Directors.
