In addition to the three competence areas of mathematics, reading and science, the 2022 Pisa study also looked at other topics. For example, the 15-year-old students were also asked about topics such as bullying and school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Pisa report concludes that the latter had no "negative impact on the skills of pupils" in Switzerland in the areas of mathematics, reading and science.

Although Switzerland had ordered school closures at both lower and upper secondary level from spring 2020 due to Covid-19, these were relatively short by international standards. The majority of Swiss 15-year-olds from all three language regions reported "positive learning experiences and a high level of well-being" during this time, according to the report.

On the other hand, "around half of the pupils surveyed" lacked motivation to learn. However, as the report shows, "the accessibility of the teacher in particular improved the motivation to learn".

Less bullying

The 15-year-olds were also asked about bullying. Compared to the 2018 Pisa study, young people felt less exposed to bullying. In 2022, the proportion of pupils in Switzerland who reported experiencing bullying several times a month was 19%, which is comparable to the OECD average.

According to the Pisa study, Germany, Austria, Canada, France and Estonia are comparable countries with significantly higher values. By contrast, young people in Finland and Italy experience significantly less bullying than in Switzerland.

The report concludes that the positive feeling of belonging to the school has also increased.

Lower satisfaction

Life satisfaction among 15-year-olds has decreased worldwide compared to 2018. This finding also applies to Switzerland, according to the study.

However, the Swiss result is well above the OECD average and the average of most of the countries compared. According to the Pisa study, only Finland has a higher average satisfaction score.
