According to the international anti-corruption body Greco, Switzerland has made progress in the fight against corruption. In particular, the new federal law for more transparency in political financing made an important contribution to the successful conclusion of this third country review.
This was announced by the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) on Tuesday. It referred to the second addendum to the second compliance report of Greco (Council of Europe Group of States against Corruption).
The new rules on transparency in political financing were applied for the first time in the federal elections in October 2023. They require the disclosure of donations to political parties of CHF 15,000 or more. With this new federal law in particular, Switzerland has fulfilled three of the six recommendations made to it in the third country review.
In 2017, Greco adopted a series of recommendations to prevent corruption in parliament, the federal courts and the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland. As part of the third country review, Greco had already made six recommendations to Switzerland in 2011, including for more transparency in political financing.
As a result, the group of states repeatedly criticized Switzerland's efforts in this regard as inadequate. The report published on Tuesday concludes the third country review.
According to the FDJP, Switzerland remains committed to combating corruption as part of the ongoing fourth and fifth country reviews.
