The Federal Council must draw up a report on asylum procedures and expulsions to third countries. It has received this mandate from the Council of States. On Wednesday, the small chamber approved a corresponding postulate by Andrea Caroni (FDP/AR).

There was no opposition to the proposal. The Federal Council also requested that the postulate be accepted. In its words, an assessment of the discussions at European level is required. Compatibility with Swiss law and international obligations should be examined.

"This does not mean that the Federal Council wants to outsource asylum procedures and allow returns to third countries," said Justice Minister Beat Jans. The Federal Council's position has not changed. Until now, the federal government was of the opinion that asylum procedures abroad were not feasible for both legal and practical reasons.

Caroni justified his postulate with the fact that more and more countries and the EU were working on reforms to carry out asylum procedures closer to the countries of origin of the refugees. "We should think along with them - as challenging as the task is." The report should also address the issue of deporting deportees to third countries.
