The Graubünden public prosecutor's office has dropped the criminal proceedings following Gino Mäder's fatal accident at this year's Tour de Suisse. The decision is not yet legally binding, as the public prosecutor's office wrote on Friday.
According to the public prosecutor's office, no third party could be charged with any criminally relevant conduct in the death of the professional cyclist. This was the result of the interviews conducted, the examination of the bicycle ridden by Mäder and the examination of the body.
The public prosecutor's office also stated that the officials responsible for safety had fulfilled their duties. The fact that those responsible did not classify the bend where Mäder fell as "requiring a warning" was not objectionable.
According to the public prosecutor's office, it also found no evidence that Mäder's accident was connected to that of Magnus Bratli Sheffield. Sheffield had left the road at the same place as Mäder in an earlier group of drivers.
Crashed on the descent from the Albula Pass
According to the public prosecutor's office, Mäder drove off the side of the road on a bend on the descent from the Albula Pass on June 15 without any third party being involved. He then fell over an embankment into a streambed.
Forensic investigations revealed that Mäder died the following day as a result of the serious head injuries he sustained in the accident. The public prosecutor's office initiated proceedings immediately after Mäder's accident.
