Swiss experts have drawn up a new list of criteria for solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants. It is intended to support cantons and energy suppliers in the planning of energy plants, as the Academies of Sciences announced on Tuesday.

The criteria include, for example, that the landscape in which solar, wind or hydroelectric power plants are built is already being used intensively, that they can be accessed relatively easily by roads or other means of transportation and that they do not contain any protected areas for biodiversity.

The list of criteria is an initial working tool for the cantons and energy companies. According to the Academies of Sciences, the federal parliament is using the blanket decree and the Solar Express to put pressure on the rapid expansion of renewable energies outside of building zones. The cantons must define areas in which energy production has priority over other interests.

The new list of criteria is intended to help identify suitable areas where a large amount of renewable energy can be produced with the least possible impact on biodiversity and the landscape. Ultimately, the aim is to create an electronic planning tool with which users can independently select criteria, parameters, threshold values and weightings and thus create maps for different scenarios.
