The Mühlebach stream, which burst its banks ten days ago, severely damaged the cemetery in Brienz BE. Gravestones were damaged or washed away. The part of the cemetery next to the stream is partly washed away and partly covered in debris.
Major damage is suspected, according to the regional management body (RFO) and the Brienz burial district on Wednesday. The cemetery was fenced off with a privacy screen to preserve the peace of the dead. The first steps for the clean-up work will be discussed over the next few days, it was reported. The cemetery gardeners are to carry them out.
A major concern is therefore that everything is done with the utmost care. All gravestones that are not in place will be carefully removed. All personal items from the graves will be kept, even if they are broken, the RFO and the burial district assured.
The cemetery is currently still in the restricted zone. The cemetery gardeners are working under protective measures. Private individuals are not permitted.
The burial district reportedly receives many inquiries about individual graves. He showed great understanding for this. He has set up an e-mail address for concerns. As everyone is proceeding with the greatest possible care, it could take some time before those affected are informed in person, the authorities said.
In the event of a death, a personal discussion with the relatives about the burial options is planned. The parish office is at your disposal.
