Jean-Claude Dunand is the new Vicar General of the Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg. Bishop Charles Morerod appointed a third Vicar General, as the other two office holders are currently absent.
Dunand will support Bishop Morerod in the synodal transformation and leadership of the diocese, according to a statement from the diocese on Friday. The 67-year-old was born in Pruntrut and is currently the moderating pastor of the intercultural pastoral care unit Nyon - Terre Sainte.
Dunand was appointed for a term of five years. He will gradually join the team at the episcopal see in Fribourg from May 1 to ensure the transition in the canton of Vaud.
On strike after allegations of abuse
The diocese already has two vicars general. Bernard Sonney temporarily resigned from his post last September following allegations of abuse. He justified this step by stating that he did not want to hinder the ongoing investigation against him. Alain de Raemy is currently serving as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Lugano.
As his two vicars general are currently absent, Bishop Morerod considered it "necessary to appoint an additional person", the communiqué continues.
The Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg also introduced a council called "Pastoral Leadership". This replaces the previous "Appointments Council". According to the diocese, the change of name and composition with eleven members is intended to ensure better accountability of this council.
The new committee will not only deal with appointments, but should also coordinate all pastoral decisions, the statement continues.
